An Exam for Active Observers
Human vision is a closed loop: gaze is continuously redirected by intermediate hypotheses rather than a single snapshot. Decades of psychophysics and cognitive science have argued that this active observation is essential for a wide range of tasks. Whether today's multimodal large language models (MLLMs) exercise active observation is an empirical question that current vision-language benchmarks do not answer. We introduce ActiveVision, a benchmark that makes active observation measurable for MLLMs, comprising 17 tasks across 3 categories. Tasks are designed to force repeated visual perception
MIRROR: Learning from the Other View for Multi-Modal Reasoning
Unlike large language models (LLMs) that exhibit strong reasoning capabilities, vision-language models (VLMs) struggle with visual reasoning, even on geometry problems that admit equivalent text, diagram, and combined diagram+text views. We show that these views often elicit different behaviors: a model may solve a problem from text but fail on the corresponding diagram, or succeed visually while failing textually. This inconsistency suggests that different views expose complementary reasoning paths and failure modes that standard multimodal post-training does not fully exploit. To study and e
