An Experimental Design Approach to Evaluating Agentic AI's Autonomous Model Discovery

Large language model coding agents increasingly perform open-ended data modeling and analysis. These agents are stochastic and adaptive, and therefore their autonomous model discovery behavior cannot be adequately characterized by a single benchmark run. In this work, we propose an experimental design and analysis framework for systematically evaluating this discovery process, quantifying its variability, and identifying important factors. The proposed framework treats these agents as stochastic model-discovery operators, which map task-specific discovery data and an optimization target to a f

Beyond Local Accuracy: A Protocol-Level Identifiability Audit for Controlled LLM Reasoning Evaluation

LLM benchmark scores can be precise even when the observation protocol does not identify the behavioral property they are intended to measure. In a controlled, solver-grounded setting, we formalize a protocol-level identifiability audit over a finite behavioral policy class: given policies H, observation support O, and estimand $τ$, we test whether O separates every pair with different $τ$. The audit requires zero model calls and resolves our diagnostic case: base-only observation collapses seven frozen deterministic policies into one equivalence class; full support yields seven classes and no

Adaptive Multi-Step Lookahead Decoding for Diffusion Language Models

Masked diffusion language models (DLMs) enable parallel text generation by iteratively refining masked tokens, offering a promising alternative to autoregressive decoding. Recent lookahead-based decoding methods improve the accuracy--efficiency trade-off by exploring future decoding states before committing token updates. However, existing approaches mainly rely on shallow one-step lookahead, which optimizes immediate information gain but can be suboptimal for longer-horizon decoding trajectories. Meanwhile, we find that a naive extension for deeper lookahead is also ineffective, as fixed-dept
